Single Card Analysis – Gear Groovy

groovy

This art is pretty groovy

[Stride]-Stride Step-[Choose one or more cards with the sum of their grades being 3 or greater from your hand, and discard them] Stride this card on your (VC) from face down.
[ACT](VC)[1/Turn] Generation Break 2:[Choose a face down card named “Chronodragon Gear Groovy” from your G zone, and turn it face up] If you have a heart card with “Chronojet” in its card name, choose a [AUTO] ability of two face up <Gear Dragon> in your G zone, and this unit gets all of the chosen abilities until end of turn.
[ACT](VC)[1/Turn] Generation Break 3:[Soul Blast (1) & Choose a face down card from your G zone, and turn it face up] This unit gets [Power]+5000 until end of turn.

Let’s travel back in time, no not to the 70s when groovy was still a word people actually used but rather to September 2016 when this skill was revealed. After weeks of waiting for the skill of the mysterious new Chronojet and when it was people lost their minds. “IT’S TWO STRIDES IN ONE!” “GG game over” etc etc. Then a few days later we all found our heads again and realised it was kind of just okay.

The double skill was slightly redundant since you tend to kill people on the nextage turn anyway, it takes up at least 5 slots (more if you want to use it for 4 Nextage) and it’s kind of well… redundant.

So let’s take a look at what you can achieve with groovy and if it has a place in the G-zones of gear chronicle.

Getting into the groove

Currently groovy can copy these skills

But the combos that everyone likes to mention are Huang-Long and Ragnaclock.

The general idea is you make your finisher even more fierce and close games more effectively than Nextage alone and while this makes sense it’s still kind of pointless.

First lets look at Nextage-rag.The guarding strategy for Nextage is to perfect guard the first attack and then either take the second hit or block it (if possible), so adding a crit to the first attack doesn’t really do much since it can just be blocked anyway. I would say however that this combo is more effective with Chronojet G since he’s a lot harder to regularly block that Chronojet since especially with Groovy, G can get pretty crazy power levels.

And now for Nextage-Huang

This is probably the better combo of the 2 in my opinion since it can net you an extra attack or card in your hand so that’s nice but other than that there isn’t much to say. It’s simple and it’s decent but it’s not blowing down any doors especially since gears normally have massive hands anyway.

Moving into the next age

So my analysis is basically done but I want to adress something that’s brought up a lot.

Gear groovy limits design space

I don’t think this is true and I want to demonstrate why

A personal favourite of mine

This card grants an AUTO skill via an ACT skill.

If this card was a gear dragon Groovy wouldn’t be able to copy it.

So if Bushi wants to print a new gear dragon with an AUTO skill that would be broke with groovy they can just do it this way.

Final Verdict

An interesting card with some potential but not anywhere near where it’s been hyped to be – 6/10

What I do want to add is this card bears a second look at a later date depending on what compatible cards are printed.

So there you go my personal assessment of the “ultimate” gear dragon. Despite how harsh I am on it I really do like this card it’s a lot of fun and has lots of potential. Also if you wanted to be silly you can always double mystery flare.

Thanks for reading
